Peter J. M. Brennan (Retired)

“Most of life’s challenges can be conquered by faith and perseverance. A bit of luck doesn’t hurt.” – Anonymous

With over 40 years of experience practicing law in the K-W region, Peter brings a wealth of principled and practical advice to his clients. Along with Bill and David, Peter was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1977 and has practised law with his two friends and partners since that time. At this point in his career he focuses his practice almost exclusively on collaborative family law, mediation, and wills and estates work related primarily to assisting families with children with special needs. Peter has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Peter’s legal interests coincide to a great degree with his personal interests. Throughout his career he has been very active in the legal community advocating for greater accessibility and use of collaborative family law in finding solutions to his clients’ family law disputes. Among his many important volunteer pursuits, he is a founding member of the Collaborative Family Law Association Waterloo and has been a member of the Core Committee of this association since 2002. He is also the past president of Parents For Community Living Kitchener-Waterloo Inc. which is a local charitable organization dedicated to providing homes and care for developmentally challenged adults.

Peter is an avid outdoorsman spending as much time as he can biking, snowshoeing, wilderness canoeing, and gardening all with his wife Anne. He has been involved in the Wellesley and North Easthope Agricultural Society for many years and enjoys the knowledge and sense of community he gains from his involvement.

Peter continues to extend his knowledge of the law and its practical application to his areas of practice. Despite having finished his formal legal education in 1976, he has actively pursued additional education programs for his entire legal career. Peter attended the University of Windsor’s law school’s 4-day intensive “interest based negotiation and mediation” workshop, as well as a 5-day mediation and arbitration training. He has also attained both Level I and Level II collaborative family law and interdisciplinary training to benefit this important part of his legal career. In 2007, Peter also completed the Law Society of Upper Canada’s mediation and arbitration in family law program. He maintains certification in “Domestic Violence Screener Training.”

Peter practices:

  • Collaborative family law
  • Wills and estates law
  • Mediation of family and estate disputes
  • Drafting Henson trusts for special needs individuals

Peter is astute and measured in his legal advice. He enjoys working with his clients to find unique solutions to problems which can sometimes feel overwhelming to them. Coupled with his great sense of humour he is an excellent resource for his clients and partners.
